Since then the band has produced 5 singles and EPs, their most recent single being \"Unlucky\" released in 2020. The group had always enjoyed the Shaky Knees Music Festival, and had the opportunity to perform at Shaky Knees 2019 with Yellow Days, and were supposed to perform with Durand Jones & The Indications at Shaky Knees 2020, which was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The group has stated in an interview that their goal is to headline Shaky Knees one day. Amplify Decatur partners with Decatur Cooperative Ministry who then partner with 35 congregations, universities, schools, and various other areas of the community to provide transitional housing, re-housing, and homelessness prevention. Secondly, I think that this partnership between Amplify Decatur and the Indigo Girls is a huge, physical demonstration on how the Indigo Girls use their platform to affect the world in a bigger way than just through their music. The Indigo Girls have been invested in the city of Atlanta and in Decatur since they were in high school, from volunteering at food banks and soup kitchens to starting Honor the Earth, and organization that creates awareness and support for Native environmental issues.

Eddie's Attic is an intimate music venue as well as full service bar and restaurant in Decatur that has been opened since 1991. Eddie's Attic is a location that ties together and connects many of the indie folk groups from Atlanta, because of its popularity. Eddie's also holds a semi annual Open Mic Shootout where artists from all over the country perform and compete. When thinking about music from Atlanta most people, myself included turn right to hip-hop as some of the most well known music to come out of the city of Atlanta. One thing that I admire about many Atlanta artists from all genres of music is how many use their platform and presence in the music world for things greater than themselves or their music. This semester I have learned about artists from OutKast, Goodie Mob, and Childish Gambino and the different ways that each of these artists bring to light issues including police brutality, gun violence, drug usage, and environmental concerns. I wanted to continue to explore other artists from Atlanta that value using their platform for something greater than just their immediate success. In addition I wanted to look at female or predominantly female indie folk or indie rock groups, because it is some of my favorite music to listen to, and I wanted to explore local artists, in hopes of broadening my horizons.

Indie rock music originated in the 1970s in the United States and the United Kingdom, coming out of the alternative rock and punk rock genres. Indie folk music emerged after this in the late 1980s and 1990s when indie rock began to be influenced by folk music in the US and UK, and often incorporated softer instruments, like acoustic guitar, rather than louder, electric instruments. This was part of the folk music influence. Originally the term \"indie\" in the genres specifies that the artists recorded with an independent record label rather than a large commercial record company. While this still holds true for many artists, the term \"indie\" has become more associated with the sound and type of music rather than signifying the artist working with an independent record company. Now many people will just reference \"indie\" music, but the music is usually categorized as indie pop, indie rock, or indie folk.

Folk music is simply the music of the people. Since folk music from the 1960s, folk and indie artists have been closely tied to progressive and political movement. For example, many gospel songs and spirituals were also sung as folk songs and used by protesters the Civil Rights Movement. From there folk music has been closely tied to almost every political movement in the United States, including anti-war protests, the second wave of feminism, environmental movements, LGBTQ rights, and immigration. Some songs even became an anthem of sorts for the movement or protest.

Through this tour we will be exploring important locations in the live's and career's of indie folk pioneers, the Indigo Sisters, and Caroline Aiken, and then continue the tour looking at indie folk groups that are currently gaining momentum in the music scene of Atlanta. More importantly, along with the biographical story of these musicians, we will also be looking at the ways the artists have used their platforms to speak on organizations and issues that they believe are prevalent and important in the world.
