Throughout this tour, we will be exploring a few of Atlanta’s historically prominent musical genres and how American gender views affected each genre. Atlanta is an area rich with musical culture, as the area has kept up with the changes in popular music. Atlanta has been the home to many prominent jazz, blues, rock, pop, and hip-hop artists to the extent that people have come here in hopes of chasing their dreams. Even today, many hip hop fans come to “A-Town” in search of musical communities, and Atlanta has quite a few recording studios nearby. This tour will focus on prominent artists from Atlanta’s rich musical scene and their interactions with “gender” within their genre and music.

Many music genres have a \"dominant\" gender to them. Rap and hip-hop features primarily masculine artists, blues features a lot of women singers, jazz has more men, etc. We even tend to associate certain instruments with certain genders. (Cumberledge) When consider harps and flutes to be more feminine that tubas and trombones. Why is that? Is it because of the shape? The instrument's timbre? Indeed, it it because we apply our expectations for traditional masculine and feminine roles to almost any and everything tied to ourselves. Aggressive, cocky, confident, strong, etc., all become words associated with masculinity. So, when a musical genre, like rock, is aggressive it must automatically be \"masculine\" because girls aren't supposed to be aggressive.

Many of those \"expectations\" related to gender still exist today. So, we will be observing important figures in the prominent musical genres in Atlanta and how they either reacted to the gender stereotypes placed upon them, or how the musical genres themselves fit in with traditional gender roles.
