Throughout this tour, we will be exploring a few of Atlanta’s historically prominent musical genres and how American gender views affected each genre. Atlanta is an area rich with musical culture, as the area has kept up with the changes in popular music. Atlanta has been the home to many prominent jazz, blues, rock, pop, and hip-hop artists to the extent that people have come here in hopes of chasing their dreams. Even today, many hip hop fans come to “A-Town” in search of musical communities, and Atlanta has quite a few recording studios nearby. This tour will focus on prominent artists from Atlanta’s rich musical scene and their interactions with “gender” within their genre and music.

Many music genres have a \"dominant\" gender to them. Rap and hip-hop features primarily masculine artists, blues features a lot of women singers, jazz has more men, etc. We even tend to associate certain instruments with certain genders. (Cumberledge) When consider harps and flutes to be more feminine that tubas and trombones. Why is that? Is it because of the shape? The instrument's timbre? Indeed, it it because we apply our expectations for traditional masculine and feminine roles to almost any and everything tied to ourselves. Aggressive, cocky, confident, strong, etc., all become words associated with masculinity. So, when a musical genre, like rock, is aggressive it must automatically be \"masculine\" because girls aren't supposed to be aggressive.

Many of those \"expectations\" related to gender still exist today. So, we will be observing important figures in the prominent musical genres in Atlanta and how they either reacted to the gender stereotypes placed upon them, or how the musical genres themselves fit in with traditional gender roles.

Atlanta, also known as “A-Town” is quite the hub for trap, hip=hop, and rap musicians. Hip-hop is a genre that is considered to be predominantly masculine. Most popular rap artists are men, and their lyrics are indicative of the existing gender roles not only within that genre but also in society as well. An example of such hip hop music in Migos’ “Bad and Boujee”. The song covers a topic of “flexing” that is present in many hip-hop and rap songs--lots of money and expensive items and a lot of girls. In the song, the women surrounding him are also considered “bad and boujee”. “Boujee” refers to a luxurious lifestyle. The women in the music video and referred to in the song don’t play much of a role besides being proof of his popularity and ability to “flex\"--it is almost as if theya re another item to be considered a part of their wealth that they can show off. Our location, Magic City, is another example of hip hop's popular stance on women and gender roles. Magic City is a strip club frequently reference by many rappers, like Atlanta based rapper Future. Popular artists like Drake, Migos, Travis Scott, and Young Thug have reference Magic City in their lyrics as well. To many hip-hop and rap artists, women are objectified and placed amongst items to flex and to show how successful one is or has become. (Jeffries)

Their songs like \"Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik\" don't sugar-coat anything and present the issues of drugs, health issues, and guns. But on the topic of gender, Outkast's songs \"Ms. Jackson\" and \"Hey Ya\" are songs about relationships. \"Hey Ya\" talks about relationships in general, and the expectation to have one, while \"Ms. Jackson\" is a conversation between a man and his ex's mother. \"Ms. Jackson\" in particular is a powerful song, because it is quite honest about a relationship that has fallen apart. The song is from the man's perspective, but is an apology to the mother for making her daughter cry. There is still some aspect of the song that shines women in a certain light. The ex is called \"my baby's drama mama\", and the conversation is a bit more of a plea towards the mother to understand his side--that he isn't completely in the wrong. Big Boi's verse in particular makes one question whether the song actually is an apology towards the mother for making her daughter cry, or an effort to show that he was wronged by the woman (too). With lyrics like, \"Now you and your girl ain't speakin' no more / 'Cause my dick all in her mouth / Know what I'm talkin' about? / Jealousy, infidelity, envy, cheating, beating / In the year 2G, they be the same thing / So who you placin' the blame on?\"",33.846335,-84.3635778,[224,225],"Our next location is Lenox Mall. / Jealousy, infidelity, envy, cheating, beating / In the year 2G, they be the same thing / So who you placin' the blame on?\"",[129,207],{"_74":221,"_125":222,"_127":223},[],"OutKast - Ms. Jackson (Official HD Video)","\"Ms. Jackson\" by OutKast\nListen to OutKast: https://Outkast.lnk.to/listenYD\n\nSubscribe to the official Outkast YouTube channel: https://Outkast.lnk.to/subscribeYD\n\nWatch more videos by OutKast: https://OutKast.lnk.to/listenID/youtube\n\nFollow Outkast:\nFacebook: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followFI\nInstagram: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followII\nTwitter: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followTI\nWebsite: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followWI\nSpotify: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followSI\nYouTube: https://Outkast.lnk.to/subscribeYD\n\nLyrics: \nI'm sorry, Ms. Jackson, ooh, I am for real\nNever meant to make your daughter cry\nI apologize a trillion times\nI'm sorry, Ms. Jackson, ooh, I am for real\nNever meant to make your daughter cry\nI apologize a trillion times\n\n#OutKast #MsJackson #OfficialVideo","https://api.opentour.site/atlanta-music-maps/v4/public/media/0opv635nsrm5wr9619tz5sh5lwap?variant=desktop",{"_98":239,"_95":23,"_125":222,"_132":133,"_134":240,"_136":241,"_138":242,"_140":243,"_36":244,"_143":144,"_145":146,"_147":242,"_148":149,"_150":151,"_74":221,"_152":241},{"_98":226,"_95":84,"_125":227,"_132":133,"_134":228,"_136":229,"_138":230,"_140":231,"_36":232,"_143":144,"_145":146,"_147":230,"_148":149,"_150":151,"_74":233,"_152":229},277,"\"Hey Ya!\" by OutKast\nListen to OutKast: https://Outkast.lnk.to/listenYD\nSubscribe to the official Outkast YouTube channel: https://Outkast.lnk.to/subscribeYD\n\nWatch more videos by OutKast: https://OutKast.lnk.to/listenID/youtube\n\nFollow Outkast:\nFacebook: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followFI\nInstagram: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followII\nTwitter: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followTI\nWebsite: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followWI\nSpotify: https://Outkast.lnk.to/followSI\nYouTube: https://Outkast.lnk.to/subscribeYD\n\nLyrics:\nOne, two, three!\nMy baby don't mess around\nBecause she loves me so\nThis I know fo sho!\n\nBut does she really wanna\nBut can't stand to see me walk out the door\nDon't try to fight the feeling\nBecause the thought alone is killin' me right now\n\nThank God for Mom and Dad\nFor sticking to together\nLike we don't know how\n\nHey ya! (Lieb) Singing for and traveling along with Pat Chapelle's The Rabbit's Foot Company, Ma Rainey stayed with the company through its change in ownership and is rumored to have brought Bessie Smith into the Company as well. The Rabbit's Foot Company was a traveling minstrel tent show, where Gertrude \"Ma\" Rainey performed in these minstrel shows and sung blues songs from 1906. The Rabbit's Foot Company was famous for its minstrel shows: comedic skits and acts, along with performances like singing and dancing depicting African American peoples. These shows were either performed by white performers in blackface or black performers.

There have been many rumors about Ma Rainey. Some say that Ma Rainey kidnapped Bessie Smith to make her join The Rabbit's Foots Company, while others say that Ma Rainey was a mentor for Bessie Smith. Some pitted the two against each other as rivals for the crown of \"Queen of Blues.\" While the closeness of their relationship is unclear, it is widely acknowledged that Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith got along well and often laughed with each other. In fact, Sam Chatmon, one of the accompanying players, said, “I believe she was courtin’ Bessie … the way they’d talk … I believe there was somethin’ goin’ on wrong…” suggesting that their relationship was possibly much closer than expected. (Lieb) Regardless of the relationship between Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey, Ma Rainey herself recorded a song titled, \"Prove It On Me.\" With lyrics like, \"They must've been women, 'cause I don't like no men,\" and \"It's true I wear a collar and a tie,\" the song is explicitly about being a lesbian--a highly controversial topic.

Ma Rainey's singing style was rich, and she was famous for her \"Deep Moaning Blues\". Like many other blues queens, Ma Rainey sang candidly about things black women experienced--especially in terms of love.
