The historic Jellybeans roller rink in Atlanta was a popular hangout spot for up and coming music groups and producers, including Outkast, Goodie Mob, TLC, Jermaine Dupri, and Dallas Austin (Samuels).

MC Shy D, an artist originally from the South Bronx and the first recognized MC in Atlanta, sought to introduce East Coast hip hop to Atlanta. However, he soon realized that people in the South preferred upbeat songs with repetitive hooks to the lyrical dexterity that characterized New York rap. To appeal to this new audience, MC Shy D merged elements of New York sound with Miami Bass beats in his first hit single “Shake It.” Despite the success of this song, Shy D never felt fully supported in Atlanta because of his New York roots (“The Dirty South”).

The Jellybeans Roller Rink has closed down and is now home to the Ivy Community Center, a venue associated with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Black sorority.
