In the late 1900s, popular music began to rise across the United States. Music before this time, like classical music, was associated with specific social classes. For instance, classical music was categorized as music for upper-class whites and it was restricted from the black community (Campbell, 2004). Popular music consists of genres including alternative, hip hop, and pop music, that are not ranked in a hierarchy of status, but could be enjoyed collectively. Contrasting from the previous art and traditional folk music, popular music encompasses a wide variety of genres that also appeals to the taste of large populations, regardless of class, race, and gender. In the 1970s, the United States was also transitioning to recording popular music with sound recording software on personal laptops that made it easy to both record and share popular music without the need to go to a fully equipped and expensive recording studio (Lashua, 2014).

As popular music was seen as music that was accessible to many people, the industry was seen as an opportunity to voice opinions on issues, particularly minority perspectives, in hopes to bring change to social culture. Society at the time was in a period of transitioning from conservative views and segregation in race to more flexible and liberal lives. Teenagers and young adults were especially part of this new movement that wanted to move away from the traditional middle-class office job and house-wife life and instead embrace gender equality, individuality, and experiment with sexuality, drugs, and religion (Hale, 2020). Therefore, music was one way in which these new views were voiced, popularized, and resonated with listeners.

In Atlanta alone, there were artists, particularly queer musicians and production teams, of the minority groups who created and used their platforms to make people more open-minded to liberal views. Queer artists of Atlanta voiced their opinions on queer life, whether it be explicity through their lyrics, music videos, and interviews, or implicity through their personalities and clothing. The artists strived to express their true personalities and be open about their sexuality in order to empower listeners who were struggling to come out about their sexuality to the public and to help those who are not queer to understand their perspective. Several music venues and concert halls showcased these queer artists and helped to further popularize the musicians and their queer influences. There was also a rise in television programs in Atlanta that showcased LGBTQ+ artists and their lives where people expressed queer views by mocking conservative ones.

Although they bring awareness to the minority black city life as queers bring awareness to sexuality, hip-hop is stereotyped as masculine music and has a history of being anti-gay (Philips, 2018). Therefore, there is also a rise in queer artists who try to transform the industry and listeners into a genre that transcends sexuality.
